UPDATE: Theft suspect killed in crash following police pursuit near Covington – two others injured

A theft suspect was killed and a passenger in the same car was injured after allegedly stealing items from a Covington store and fleeing from a pursuing deputy resulting in a collision with another.

Editor’s note: The following is information sent from the King County Sheriff’s Office regarding the incident.

  • The vehicle was, in fact, stolen.  We originally only knew the license plates were stolen and the occupants were suspects in a theft from Covington.  It wasn’t until the car was cut apart that detectives were able to confirm that the car was stolen in August from the city of Auburn.
  • The suspects allegedly stole clothing and electronics items from the Kohl’s Department store in Covington prior to being located by the deputy.
  • The suspect driver was a 34 year old female whose last known address was in Puyallup.  She died at the scene of the collision.
  • The male passenger in the suspect car was a 30 year old man whose last known address was in Auburn.  He had a Department of Corrections arrest warrant for escape from community custody.  Currently at Harborview Medical Center.
  • The female passenger in the suspect car was a 26 year old woman whose last known address was in Federal Way.  Currently at Harborview Medical Center.
  • The male passenger in the uninvolved pickup was in WA on business from TX.  He sustained a broken leg and was transported to Valley Medical Center for treatment.
  • The pursuing deputy has been with KCSO for 8 years and was a police officer in Massachusetts before joining the sheriff’s office.
  • There will be a department driving review board, which is standard procedure for vehicle pursuits, convening at a later date.

A theft suspect was killed and a passenger in the same car was injured Sept. 29 after allegedly stealing items from a Covington store and fleeing from a pursuing deputy resulting in a collision with another.

At about 6:03 p.m. deputies were alerted to a theft suspect leaving a store in Covington. They were given a description of the vehicle, a license plate, and a description of the driver by dispatch. At least the license plate of the vehicle was reported stolen.

The suspect vehicle left the scene before police arrived only to be spotted by a detective going home. The detective was unable to contact the vehicle but gave dispatch the last known direction.

Another King County Sheriff’s deputy was nearby and located the vehicle and attempted to stop the car.

The suspect refused to stop, and instead, attempted to elude the deputy. That deputy initiated a short, three minute, pursuit of the car and had temporarily lost sight of the recklessly driven vehicle.

The deputy located the suspect vehicle again when the car had collided with an, otherwise uninvolved, pickup truck. A passenger in the pickup truck was also injured in the collision. The collision occurred in the 32800 block of SE Auburn Black Diamond RD.

The two injured people were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries, and the driver of the suspect vehicle died at the scene. The deputy involved in the pursuit was uninjured and not involved in

Detectives from the King County Sheriff’s Office Major Accident Response and Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and will be conducting the investigation.
