Two adults and three children have been displaced following an apartment fire in the 23700 block of 110 Avenue Southeast this morning.

The fire was first reported at 6:56 a.m. by the resident who said that there were flames coming from the clothes dryer of the first floor apartment. She also told the 911 call receiver that everyone had escaped safely.

When firefighters from the Kent Fire Department RFA and Renton Fire Department arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from a window of a ground level apartment. Because the fire was in a room that had a window, firefighters were able to extinguish much of the fire from the exterior of the building before taking more hose lines inside to check for additional fire.

The fire damage was limited to the one apartment, though at least one other had to be cleared of smoke.

The residents, who were not injured, are working with the apartment management to find a new residence and Red Cross was not requested.

The cause of the fire was a mechanical problem with the clothes dryer which caused it to overheat and is considered accidental.

There were no working smoke alarms in the apartment.
