Winter playoffs round up for Kentwood, Kentlake and Tahoma

Basketball

The Kentwood boys basketball team is responsible for handing the reigning 4A state champions, the Federal Way Eagles, its first loss in 63 games.

The Conks won 69-59 Saturday in the 4A North Puget Sound League title game at Auburn Riverside.

Senior guard Darius LuBom scored a team high 22 points, and junior guard D’Angelo Minnis had 14 points off the bench including a three pointer late to give Kentwood a three-point lead.

And with a minute remaining, Minnis drained another three to give the Conks its largest lead of the game at six points.

This was the first time Kentwood had faced Federal Way since losing to the Eagles in the 4A state championship last season.

Kentwood Girls

The Conks also played in a playoff seeding game Saturday against Enumclaw.

Kentwood won 39-30.

Sophomore guard Nicole Ajayi had a team high 12 points for the Conks.

Kentlake Girls

The Falcons lost an NPSL seeding game Saturday 53-35 to Auburn Riverside.

Junior center Aolani Talamaivao-Caideron had a team high nine points for Kentlake.

Tahoma Boys

The Bears played Auburn Riverside Saturday in a seeding game.

Tahoma lost 62-47.

The team high scorer for Tahoma was senior forward Clayton Stultz with 21.

Gymnastics

The Conks, Falcons and Bears participated in the 4A NPSL Cascade division league meet Saturday.

As a team, both Kentlake and Tahoma have advanced to the West Central District meet Saturday at Auburn Mountainview.

Wrestling

The Tahoma wrestling team once again rose to the top in the 4A subregional tournament Saturday at Kent Meridian High School.

The Bears were dominate up and down the weight classes with nine wrestlers taking first place and three taking second. The Bears had 21 wrestlers finish in the top six overall and they will move to the 4A Region 2 Wrestling Tournament at Skyline High School Saturday.

Kentwood also did very well with two taking first place and five second. The Conks had 20 wrestlers finish in the top six and will move to the regional tournament.

Kentlake had three wrestlers take second and the Falcons will send 12 to Skyline.

Boys Swim and Dive

The Tahoma High boys made a strong showing at the 4A West Central District swim and dive meet Saturday at Curtis High.

The Bears team scored 167. Kentwood and Kentlake each scored 58.

Each team will be sending swimmers to the state meet Feb. 17 at the King County Aquatic Center.

Tahoma

The top swimmer for the Bears was Nick Ainsworth who took first in the 50-yard free style in 22 seconds. He swam fourth in the 49.55.

Parker Wichelmann took fourth in the 200 free in 1:51.75 and the 500 in 5:05.38.

Diver Zach Klobutcher took fifth scoring 339.40.

Tahoma’s 200 yard relay team took third in 1:32.07 — Jared Wold, Wichelmann, David Brannon and Ainsworth.

The 400 relay team swam second in 3:23.43 — Wold, Wichelmann, Jan Grobbelaar and Ainsworth.

Kentwood

Matthew Shull took sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.34.

Kentlake

The Falcons 400 relay team took seventh in 3:34.41 — Connor Riley, Nolan Sandifer, Alex Phillips and Colin Bryant

Bryant took seventh in the 100 free in 50.54.
