WIAA releases new ranking system for boys, girls basketball

The WIAA released its first Ratings Percentage Index standings for boys and girls basketball.

On Jan. 6, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association released its first Ratings Percentage Index standings for boys and girls basketball.

In a release from the WIAA, the rankings will be updated daily throughout the regular season. These standings will also be used to determine seeding for the 2017 Hardwood Classic.

The formula used to determine the rankings, according to the WIAA release, is 25 percent the team’s winning percentage, 50 percent the opponent’s winning percentage and the remaining 25 percent the opponents’ opponent’s winning percentage.

This data is collected by MaxPreps, which is the official digital media partner of the WIAA, the release stated.

The release also said “It is the responsibility of WIAA member schools to manage their schedules and scores using MaxPreps.”

This RPI ranking system was approved by the WIAA Executive Board in September 2016.
