Western Washington signs Kentwood star to scholarship

Minnis averaged 15.3 points for the Conks last season

Kentwood guard D’Angelo Minnis has signed to play basketball at Western Washington University.

Minnis, the North Puget Sound League Cascade Division Most Valuable Player last season, averaged 15.3 points, 4.3 assists and 2.2 steals for the Conquerors last season. He was a 4A All-State selection by the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association (WIBCA) and played in the 4A vs. 3A state all-star game, scoring 13 points.

Minnis made more than 50 3-pointers in his senior season, including a school-record nine trays against Kentridge.

“D’Angelo is a tremendous young man with great basketball IQ. He is a winner on and off the court and works hard to excel as such,” said WWU coach Tony Dominguez. “He has an incredible ability to put his teammates in the right position to be successful and also has the ability to score. He has a very high upside and his quickness combined with his toughness and scoring ability are assets that will serve us well.

“We are very fortunate to have D’Angelo as a part of our Viking family, and I am excited to see him use his infectious positive personality to be a strong leader for us.”

As a junior in 2016-17, Minnis was a key part of the 4A state championship team that beat Union 81-61 in the title game. With five starters lost to graduation after the championship season, Minnis helped lead Kentwood back to the playoffs during his senior season, finishing with a 19-8 record.

“D’Angelo is one of, if not, the hardest workers I have ever coached,” said Blake Solomon, Kentwood’s coach. “He has earned everything he has gotten. Western is getting a great basketball player but a better person. D’Angelo will leave his mark on the campus and program by the time his four years are done.”

Minnis is the fourth of WWU’s recruiting class that is being announced this week as program additions for the 2018-19 season. Forward Cameron Retherford (Portland Community College), shooting guard Tucker Eenigenburg (Bakersfield College) and guard/forward Jalen Green (Lindbergh High School) were announced earlier this week.
