Top 10 at district meet for Tahoma, Kentwood

The Kentwood boys swim team placed eighth overall with 122 points while the team from Tahoma finished ninth with 120.5 points. Kentlake finished 13th with 69 points.

Kentridge took home second place with wins in the 200 yard medley relay and 200 yard freestyle relay as well as top eight finishes in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay. Kentridge diver Brady Shutt finished second in diving with a score of 296.1 points.

The Bears started the meet with a third place finish in the 200 medley relay made up of Stephen Shin, Ethan Wunschel, Michael Cox and Mitch Halbert. In the same event the Conqueror relay of Dane Turnbull, Kevin Molloy, Logan Stoick and Andrew Stone finished seventh and Erik Fulmer, Jalen Koon, Quentin Knox and Jake Hagen of Kentlake finished 11th.

Senior Erik Fulmer from Kentlake finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 46.52 seconds, besting his preliminary time by almost four seconds. Brian Wright, a junior from Kentwood, finished 10th with a time of 1:57.78.

Logan Stoick of Kentwood finished eighth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.91.

Mitch Halbert and Nick Watson of Kentridge tied for 13th in the 50 freestyle, both posting a time of 23.39.

Tahoma, Kentlake and Kentwood were all represented in the 100 butterfly finals. Michael Cox from Tahoma took home second with a state-qualifying time of 53.03, Fulmer finished fifth in 55.18 — also making the state cut — and Kevin Molloy finished seventh in 55.73.

Halbert swam the 100 free, finishing sixth in the final heat with a time of 50.66.

Wright dropped almost eight seconds off his prelim time in the 500 freestyle, finishing 10th with a time of 5:18.16.

In the 200 yard freestyle relay teams from Olympia and Mount Rainier tied for fourth while the Tahoma relay of Coleman Blakely, Brennan Toomey, Cory Cox, and Tyler Rinck finished ninth, and the Kentlake relay of Fulmer, Quentin Knox, Jalen Koon, and Jake Hagen finished 12th.

Kentwood swimmers Dane Turnbull and Logan Stoick finished seventh and eighth in the 100 back while Tahoma’s Shin finished ninth.

The Conks’ Kevin Molloy finished third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.51 and Knox of Kentlake finished seventh in 1:06.72.

The meet wrapped up with a fifth place finish by the Tahoma relay of Blakely, Halbert, Shin and Cox in the 400 freestyle relay and a ninth place finish by Wright, Stoick, Turnbull and Molloy of Kentwood.

The WIAA state swimming and diving competition is set for Feb. 15-16 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
