Kentwood grad’s dreams come true

Her dreams of becoming a professional dancer all started when she saw her siblings as amazing dancers, and now she is living the dream.

Kayla Umagat started dancing at a young age and was very successful with her time dancing at Kentwood High School.

After she graduated, she moved onto a much bigger stage and became a Seagal for the Seattle Seahawks.

“Being a Seagal was really fun and I definitely loved it,” Umagat said. “I loved being able to do what I love in front of my home state.”

She said one of the hardest parts about being a Seagal, or a dancer in general, is trying to do all of her routines and workouts with muscle and joint problems.

She said she loves dancing so much though, she hasn’t let her pains get in the way of her professional dancing career and said she will always push through the pain.

Recently, Umagat decided to move on to the next chapter of her life and go to Los Angles and become a Laker Girl for the LA Lakers basketball team.

This goal was inspired by her brother and dad who according to Umagat, are huge Lakers fans.

“My dad and brother love basketball and they are just the most amazing people to me (and) their team was the Lakers after the Sonics left,” she said.

Once she made the Lakers dance team, she said it was a hard transition to be away from the home she has always known and love.

“Right when I moved to LA I got to work with another really great group of girls, it (was) nice to transition from one team to another team,” Umagat said.

She also said going from dancing for an NFL team to an NBA team has been a challenge and change for her as well. In the NBA, there are more games and she said dancing on the hard gym floor compared to turf was something to get used to as well.

Ironically, Umagat loves to perform, but she said she has major stage fright right before she does a performance.

“It’s like the first 30 seconds before I perform I have a freak out, but when I step onto the field or the court I know that’s where I belong,” she said.

With performing in mind, Umagat said learning routines and making them “game ready” is always a challenge, but an extremely fun one.

“It is very hard. First you learn the routine, have a few weeks to sit on it while practicing it, and then you clean the dance,” she said. “It’s basically learn, clean, critique and then game ready.”

“Clean the dance” according to Umagat is when you go through every single count of the routine that leads to performing with the team for the next practice. By that time she said you should be ready to perform with no mistakes.

To prepare for practices and games, she said she works on her cardio and tries to eat as healthy as she can.

“This is my only body and my body is what allows me to dance, so I really need to take care of my body,” Umagat said.

Once Umagat decides she wants to move on from dancing, she wants to become a nurse like her siblings. For now though, she said she plans on doing what she loves for as long as she can.

“Performing is nothing like I can explain, it’s like walking into Disneyland (and)Disneyland is like everyones favorite place,” she said. “When I walk onto the court, I fall in love.”
