Kentwood boys set another school record at districts | Swim and Dive

The Kentwood Conqueror's medley relay team started finals at the West Central District III meet on Feb. 8 by setting a new school record and earning a fourth place finish in the event.

The Kentwood Conqueror’s medley relay team started finals at the West Central District III meet  on Feb. 8 by setting a new school record and earning a fourth place finish in the event.

The relay team of seniors Dane Turnbull, Kevin Molloy, Brian Wright and Logan Stoick posted a time of 1 minute, 42.07 seconds.

The team turned in impressive swims throughout the meet and finished fifth overall. Curtis, Gig Harbor, Kentridge and Mount Rainier claimed the first four team spots. Kentlake finished 10th overall and Tahoma finished 12th.

Also in the 200 medley relay the Kentlake team of Quentin Knox, Jalen Koon, Elias Knoblock and Colin Bryant finished 10th in 1:50.77 and Tahoma’s relay of Chris Hatch, Ethan Wunschel, Tavares DeLeon and Tyler Rinck finished 11th in 1:53.70.

In the next event Kentwood’s Wright finished second by .35 seconds in the 200 freestyle final behind Noah Willers of Stadium High. Wright finished in a state qualifying time of 1:47.60. Sophomore Patrick Knox of Kentlake finished 16th with a time of 2:01.48.

Coleman Blakely of Tahoma finished 14th in the 200 individual medley followed by Cole Hendricks form Kentwood in 15th.

Turnbull finished 6th in the 50 free in his first individual swim of the night, posting a state qualifying time of 22.59.

Tahoma’s Stephen Millard finished 4th in diving with a score of 300.40. Evan Eidal of Kentlake finished right behind in 5th with a score of 298.45. Those finishes secured a trip to the state competition later this month for both Millard and Eidal. Loren Natario of Kentwood finished 14th with a score of 223.20.

In the 100 butterfly event Molly finished fifth with a time of 56.03. Knobloch, a freshman, finished 9th in the same event with a time of 56.60 and his teammate Quentin Knox finished 11th with a time of 57.94.

Wright turned in another state qualifying time in the 50 freestyle, finishing fourth with a time of 49.52. Stoick finished 8th with a time of 50.93.

In the 500 free Knobloch finished 8th with a time of 5:13.68. Fellow Kentlake falcon Colin Bryant finished 13th with a time of 5:30.18 and falcon Patrick Knox finished 15th with a time of 5:34.06.

The Kentwood 200 freestyle relay of Andrew Stone, Hendricks, Tjay Mason, and Blake Rizzo finished 6th in 1:35.58. The Tahoma relay of Rinck, Wunschel, Blakely, and Cory Cox finished 10th in 1:36.55, and the Kentlake relay of Eidal, Jonathan Elliot, Koon, and Patrick Knox finished 13th in 1:42.70.

Kentwood had two top finishers, Turnbull and Stoick, in the 100 backstroke who finished 5th and 7th, respectively.

Kentlake had two finalists in the 100 breaststroke – Quentin Knox who finished 9th and Bryant who finished 16th. In the same event Edward Quintos finished 14th for Kentwood.

In the last event of the night, the 400 freestyle relay, the Kentwood relay of Stoick, Molly, Turnbull and Wright finished 4th in a time of 3:26.77. The relay of Quentin Knox, Knoblock, Patrick Knox and Bryant finished 10th and the team of Rinck, Cooper Mattern, Wunschel, and Blakely from Tahoma finished 13th.

Next up in the boys swim and dive post season is the State Championship meet the weekend of Jan. 21 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
