Jockey Gallyn Mitchell rode Assessment from off the pace to win in the 74th running of the Longacres Mile, Grade III.
Mitchell celebrated his 47th birthday Saturday with a win in the Washington Oaks aboard No Flies On Doodle Saturday and he followed with another birthday present for himself Sunday in the Mile.
Assessment, condition by Howard Belvoir, ran from the 12 hole and became only the second horse since 1935 to win from the far outside post position.
Atta Boy Roy led into the homestretch, but in the final two furlongs Assessment ran down the leader and sealed the trip to the winner’s circle.
Assessment ran one mile in 1:33 2/5 on a fast track and paid $16.60, $7.20 and $5.20.
The Mile victory was the second consecutive for Belvoir who won with Wasserman last year. Wasserman ran fourth this year.
