Gladys H. Winston

Gladys H. Winston, 95, died peacefully ‘at home’ on March 15, 2011. Gladys was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on November 5, 1915. She lived in various locations across Canada before graduating from St. Anne’s Academy in Victoria, BC. Gladys’ early life was full of adventure, which included serving with the Canadian Women Army Corps, completing her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital and eventually working her way back to the Northwest, when she met an Irishman, who charmed her into marrying him. Gladys married James D. Winston on November 26, 1948 in Seattle, WA where they raised their three children. Gladys loved being a “Mom”. She was an active room-mother providing treats for special occasions and she chaperone many of her children’s field trips. Gladys’ love of children and cooking eventually lead her to the Renton School District, where she worked cooking and serving lunches at Dimmit Junior High for many years. Gladys adored her grandchildren and spending time with them. Her love of life was contagious and she would bring a spark and laughter to any party. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, and being outdoors watching birds, looking for flowers, tending her roses, and loved all of God’s creatures. Many Sundays included rides throughout the Northwest, with one of her favorite destinations, Mt. Rainier National Park. Gladys was an active member of St. Anthony Parish, Renton for many years until her age no longer allowed her to volunteer and serve. Her love of God was evident in how she cared for children and any living thing. Gladys is survived by her husband, Jim, of 62 years; sons Michael (Jean), Kevin (Rebecca) and daughter Valerie Winston Healy (Stephen); grandchildren Britton, Christian, Ryan, Heather, and Hannah; seven great grandchildren, and many extended family members.
