Waste Management will resume picking up Maple Valley residents' trash today, Aug. 1.

Waste Management will resume collecting Maple Valley residents’ trash today, Aug. 1.

City Manager David Johnston stated in a telephone interview that Waste Management sent him an email this morning announcing their resumed service in several cities, including Maple Valley, using substitute drivers. Recycling, however, will not be collected as of yet.

According to the email, “Those customers missed previously, will receive double loads at no additional charge on their next regular collection day.”

Johnston stated that Maple Valley has a multi-year franchise agreement with Waste Management that ends in 2014.

A part of the agreement, he said, includes fines if trash is not collected.

“There’s an expectations to provide a service to the community,” he said. “If there’s a disruption, there’s a penalty to you. There’s a penalty structure they’ve agreed to after a certain number of days of not picking up the fines start kicking in.”
