Retired Metro van donated to community center

The Black Diamond Community Center was the recipient of a surplus Metro Transit Vanpool van.

Metropolitan King County Vice Chair Reagan Dunn delivered the van Sept. 21 to the center to assist the facility in meeting the transportation needs in the community, a media release stated.

“It’s wonderful to be able to pair these retired Metro vans with organizations that service residents in District 9,” said Dunn in the release. “This van, that will transport those who visit the Black Diamond Community Center, now has a second opportunity to provide for King County residents.”

The van will used to help transport senior citizens on Tuesdays and Thursdays to and from the center. It will also be used for children grades kindergarten to fifth in the daycare program at the community center.

“The Black Diamond Community Center is very thankful for the new van that was donated,” said Cheryl Hanson, Executive Director of the Black Diamond Community Center, in the release.

Arts &Tech event coming to Covington

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 the Covington Library will be hosting Arts &Tech Fest.

The event is free and while it is geared toward older adults, it is open to everyone.

Throughout the day, there will be classes including one on cell phone photography.

September is National Voter Registration Month

Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman declared September National Voter Registration Month and Sept. 26 was designated National Voter Registration Day.

While Sept. 26 has passed and September is coming to an end, there is still time to register if you would like to vote in this year’s General Election.

Washington citizens have until Oct. 9 to register online to vote while Oct. 30 is the deadline for new voters to register.

General Election ballots will be mailed out by Oct. 20 with the election ending on Nov. 7.

Public hearing scheduled on recreational marijuana home grows

The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board is hosting a public hearing on Wednesday, Oct. 4 to receive input from the public on whether the state should allow home grows of recreational marijuana.

The public hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the board meeting at 3000 Pacific Avenue in Olympia.

Written comment is also encouraged and may be submitted through Oct. 11. To submit a written comment, you may email it to rules@lcb.wa.gov or mail it to PO Box 43080, Olympia, Washington 98504.

The public hearing will also be available to watch online — the link with be posted to the Board’s webpage, https://lcb.wa.gov/boardmeetings/board_meetings, at least 24 hours in advance.
