The Rotary Club of Kent named their students of the month

Kentwood seniors students of the month

The Rotary Club of Kent named their students of the month, Kentwood High School seniors Matthew Barden and Rachel Canning. The club recognized them for their work in Career and Technical Programs.

Barden’s CET programs include computer applications, creative cooking, digital design, marketing and sports medicine. He designed the Kentwood Invictus logo and the logo for the Kentwood Sports Medicine Program. He plans to attend a four year college to prepare for a career in either sports medicine or graphic design.

Canning’s CET programs focused on marketing where she worked with local businessed and advanced in state in DECA. Canning also interned at the Kent International Festival. ASB and Conk Crew as well as leading the youth group at her church are also programs she participates in. She plans to attend a four year college to study market analysis and statistics or digital design.

Elementary school student traveling for boxing nationals

Rustam Gulaliyev and his coaching staff flew out to Independence, Missouri for boxing Nationals on Jan. 31. 11-year-old Gulaliyev attends Martin Sortum Elementary School.

A total of 11 youth have qualified from the Pacific Northwest. The youth and their coaches will travel together out of SeaTac airport.

Public input meeting for open spaces in Black Diamond

King County Parks will be taking public input as it develops a stewardship plan for three open spaces in the Black Diamond area.

A long-term plan for the natural areas will be discussed during a Feb. 8 public meeting in Ravensdale from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the commons at Tahoma Junior High School. King County Parks Division representatives will provide information about the spaces and present draft recommendations for uses and stewardship of the area, reflecting ideas brought up by participants during the Nov. 30 meeting.

For those unable to attend the Feb. 8 meeting, written comments will be accepted until Tuesday, Feb. 28.
