Passenger tries to fake out cops during chase through Covington

In an effort to try and throw off pursuing police officers a woman in the back of a car being chased through Covington Monday called in a robbery that wasn’t happening at a nearby convenience store.

It didn’t work, a King County Sheriff’s Office spokesman John Urquhart said.

The Bonney Lake man behind the wheel and his 35 year old female passenger from Puyallup were eventually caught and booked into the King County Jail.

Around 10:45 p.m. Monday, a Covington police officer pulled over a 2001 Chevrolet S-10 pick-up as a possible DUI at Southeast 240th Street and 180th Avenue Southeast.

As the deputy walked up to the car the vehicle took off, spraying rocks and dirt over the deputy.

This set off an eight minute chase that covered nine miles at speeds up to 70 mph.

During the chase, the passenger in the car, a 35 year-old Puyallup woman, used her cell phone to call 9-1-1 and tried to report an armed robbery of the Circle K at Southeast Kent Kangley Road and 168th Avenue Southeast.

Dispatchers did not take the bait, however, and the chase continued.

The driver of the truck slowed to turn right onto Southeast Wax Road from Covington-Sawyer Road and that’s when the deputy saw his chance. He used his patrol car in a PIT maneuver and the driver lost control of the truck and hit a power pole. The driver and passenger suffered very minor injuries.

The driver was booked for investigation of felony flight and was found to have escaped from the department of corrections community custody, as well, when he was booked into the jail.
