Kentlake graduate serves with Navy

Petty Officer Third Class Breanna Arroyos, a 2012 Kentlake graduate, currently serves with a U.S. Navy strike fighter squadron.

She is an aviation ordnanceman with the Blue Diamonds of VFA 146 stationed out of Naval Air Station Lenmoore. An aviation ordnanceman “is responsible for loading and arming the weapons required on the jet and the safety of the jet upon the pilots return,” according to a media release.

Essay contest awards scholarships

Each year the Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsors a series of essay contests and awards an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. and up to a $30,000 scholarship to a high school student and up to $5,000 scholarship to a middle school student.

Essays are due to your local VFW Post by Oct. 31.

For the 2018-2019 school year, ninth to 12th graders are asked to write on “Why My Vote Matters,” sixth to eighth graders are asked about “Why I Honor the American Flag” and third through fifth graders are asked to write about “How the American Flag Makes Me Feel.”

Students in the Maple Valley area can submit their essays to VFW Post 5052 via email at or by mail to P.O. Box 1491, Maple Valley.

City of Maple Valley asks for citizen input

The city of Maple Valley along with Columbia Hospitality is in the process of assessing the Lake Wilderness Golf Course.

The assessment will help guide future reinvestment decisions at the course, according to a media release.

The city is asking citizens to rank the importance of potential course improvements by completing a short survey. The survey will remain open until 5 p.m. today, Friday, June 8.
