Concert this Saturday at Tahoma

The Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra is celebrating American composers with a concert at the new performing arts auditorium at Tahoma High School.

The concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, May 19.

Tickets are $10 suggested donation. Donations will be taken at the door.

Citizen awards nominations now accepted

The city of Covington recognizes two individuals each year as its Citizen of the Year and Honorary Citizen of the Year.

Over the years, those honored have been volunteers, advocates, ambassadors, dedicated residents and assets of the city, according to a media release.

If you know anyone that should be honored now is your time to nominate them. The citizen of the year award nominees must live within the city limits. While the honorary member can live outside the city limits but must make an impact on the city, the release stated.

Award winners will be celebrated at the July 10 council meeting and will be asked to participate in the Covington Days Festival Parade in July and annual tree lighting event in December.

Nominations can be made online at www.covingtonwa.gov/citizenoftheyear or a letter can be dropped off or mailed to City Hall by June 5.

SR 18 paving now through May 27

Road construction and lane closures began May 7 and are expected to run through Sunday, May 27.

The closures typically begin at 9 p.m. and run through 5 a.m. westbound from state Route 18 to Southeast 231st Street.

City awarded local records grant

On May 1 the city of Maple Valley was notified it had been awarded a Washington State Archives Local Records Grant for digital imaging for $15,000, according to a media release.

The funds from this grant will reimburse the city for the cost of digital imaging in 2018.

Scanning and digitizing documents make records more accessible, easier to search and reduces the cost of records storage, the release added.

Celebration station this Friday, today

The city of Maple Valley will be participating in F5 Bike Everywhere Day today, Friday, May 18 by hosting a celebration station.

The celebration station will be located along the Cedar River Trail near the intersection of state Route 169 and Southeast 214th Street, across from Foley’s Produce. The station will be open from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Successful post office food drive

More than 60 volunteers including Kentwood football players, Mattson Interact Club, Praise Alujah and Storehouse volunteers helped unload 11,653 pounds of food that came in from 22 different mail routes, Cassandra Rush with Storehouse wrote in an email.
