Chopper lands at Tahoma Middle School during medical evacuation of Hobart shooting victim

Tahoma Middle School’s play field became a landing zone Wednesday morning for a medical evaluation helicopter, according to Kevin Patterson, Tahoma School District spokesman.

The chopper was transporting a shooting victim from the Hobart area to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The victim, a 49 year old man from Hobart, was shot once in the leg around 10:30 a.m. at his home in the 21600 block of 294th Ave. S.E. according to King County Sheriff’s Office spokesman John Urquhart.

He was able to call for help despite his injuries which were “serious but not life threatening.” The suspect fled before the deputies arrived. The motive for the shooting weren’t immediately clear, Urquhart said, but it seems the victim knew his assailant.

Patterson said the shooting happened about 5 miles away from the school. When the helicopter landed, students were kept inside the school and were not allowed out until it left.

Urquhart said the case remains under investigation.
