Blood drives scheduled for November

Cascade Regional Blood Services announced three drives for next month.

The first blood drive will run from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Kentlake High School on Monday, Nov. 6.

Imbibe Bottlehouse & Taproom will host the Bloodmobile from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12. And the Covington Safeway will host the Bloodmobile from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21.

Meet Port Commission candidate

Ryan Calkins will be at Ristrettos Coffee & Wine at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 to discuss his campaign.

In a release, it stated as a commissioner Calkins will:

• Support local businesses in creating good, family-wage jobs

• Act as a custodian to our local environment, by making the port as efficient and clean as possible

• Improve transparency around contracting, pay increases

Kentwood officer named Officer of the Year

Shanon Lanz, Kentwood’s safety officer, was named Washington School Safety and Security Organization’s Safety Service Officer of the Year.

A release from the Kent School District said Lanz “won for the tone of compassion, empathy and respect he shows each student as well as always emulating the attitude and behavior he expects from the students.”

Maple Valley finance DEPARTMENT receives award

Maple Valley City Manager Laura Philpot presented the city’s Finance Department with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.

According to a media release, this is the 15th year in a row the department has received this honor.

The department was awarded for its “commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting,” the release stated.

The award is issued by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.
