Black Diamond police boating class

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 28 the Black Diamond Police Department are hosting an Adventure in Boating class.

The class will fulfill the requirements needed to obtain a Boaters Education Card.

Washington boaters 12 years and older who operate a boat at 15 horsepower or greater are required to have an education card with them.

This class offers students the opportunity to interact with an instructor, learn specific boating information and network with other boaters.

This class is free and open to the public.

Upon completing the class, students will need to send in their application along with supporting documents to Washington State Parks to get an education card. A check or money order of $10 made out to Washington State Parks is also required.

Bestselling author coming to Covington

J.A. Jance will be visiting Covington and other cities throughout western Washington in early-mid April to discuss and sign her new thriller — Duel to the Death.

Jance will be at the Covington Library at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 5.

GMVUAC meeting announcement

The Greater Maple Valley Unincorporated Area Council will hold its monthly meeting from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, April 2 at the Maple Valley Fire Station (22300 SE 231st St.).

This month’s guest speaker will be Harold Taniguchi, director of the King County Department of Transportation. He will be there to discuss and answer questions about the Department of Local Services that was created to better respond to needs of rural areas and areas of unincorporated King County.

Passport fair March 30

Today, Friday, March 30 from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. at the Covington Post Office, a passport fair will be taking place.

The fair will allow for attendees to apply for passports. Applicants must show proof of citizenship and proof of identity.

The fees are $135 for those 16 years and older or $105 for those under the age of 16.

Passport photos will also be available for $15.

For the love of the city events

The city of Covington and Maple Valley will be hosting workshops next week to discuss what people like about the cities and what would make them better places to live.

Maple Valley’s will take place 5 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 4 at Lake Wilderness Lodge. While Covington’s will be held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 5 at Kentwood High School.

Author Peter Kageyama of “For the Love of Cities” and “Love Where You Live,” will lead these free, interactive workshops.

At both events, pizza and refreshments will begin at 5 p.m. and the workshop will start at 5:30 p.m.

Maple Valley seeks council member

Megan Sheridan recently resigned from Position No. 5 on the Maple Valley City Council.

Due to her resignation, the city is looking for someone to fill the open spot.

The open seat will be filled by appointment of the council and the appointee will serve until the next General Election. The term for this position expires Nov. 26, 2019.

To be considered you must be 18 years or older, live within city limits, be a citizen of the U.S. and a registered voter in Washington.

Councilmembers are compensated $550 per month during their length of service.

To be considered, applicants need to submit an application and declaration of eligibility — including a resume and cover letter, naming priorities you see for the community and explaining your view of a councilmember.

Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. Friday, April 13 to the City Clerk at City Hall, P.O. Box 320 Maple Valley, WA 98038.

During a public session, the council will interview each qualifying applicant and the selected person would begin their term May 1.
