Two apartments were damaged by the fire.

According to a press release from Capt. Kyle Ohashi, spokesman for the department, the fire started on the second floor of the two story building. A second apartment directly beneath the other suffered from water damage as Kent firefighters worked to extinguish the flames. Because of quick work by firefighters, only the apartment where the fire originated suffered heat and smoke damage.

No one was home in either apartment at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries. At least six of the displaced were children. All the occupants have been contacted by the property managers.

The Washington Park Apartment managers have also offered to assist the displaced residents by finding them other apartments within the complex in an effort to help minimize the transition.

Red Cross is also assisting. No one else in the building was affected.

A Kent Fire Department investigator is on scene to determine the cause of the fire. There is no damage estimate at this time.
