How We Ranked The Top Kratom Brands
Ranking the best kratom brands required a lot of factors, and we considered the following points to establish the best ones in today’s market:
We considered this factor because some companies source products from low-quality growers while others source Kratom from high-quality farms. The quality of Kratom played an essential role in our team’s rankings, which weighted higher than any other factors.
We understand the importance of high-quality Kratom and consider tested products for their alkaloid content and purity. Some companies even take some of their kratom growers to sell directly to consumers, while some take time to test each batch first, even before they release it to the public.
Variety and Offerings
If you would notice, the list contains a lot of suppliers who offer a range of strains, vein color options, and dosage of Kratom. We also highlighted companies offering tinctures, capsules, and powders, among others. Consumers will have a better range of choices of high-quality Kratom.
Compared to other industries, kratom sourcing is not as transparent. Some kratom companies secure fair trade sources, though. Some opt to disclose their farm or region sources of Kratom. We recommend kratom brands that work with a more transparent sourcing approach.
American Kratom Association (AKA) Approval
The American Kratom Association or AKA has provided guidelines that kratom companies within or are selling to the U.S. It is worth noting that the best kratom companies are the ones that comply with the AKA guidelines. Majority of kratom companies in America ship bulk kratom from suppliers overseas, especially from Southeast Asian countries. After acquiring these kratom products, Kratom gets assembled or formulated in AKA compliant facilities in the U.S. Compliance requires specific testing and cleaning procedures.
Some companies are cGMP compliant, meaning they meet current Good Manufacturing Practices that the FDA enforces. cGMP Compliant: Like AKA compliance, good kratom companies can also be determined via the cGMP compliant. A company that meets the compliance requirements of the cGMP means that its facilities meet the specific manufacturing standards.
Support and Customer Service
Not all kratom companies have excellent customer support, but some have great reputations. Some though have had shady refund practices, among other problems.
Pricing and Value
Some people would buy sample packs for $20 or less, while others would spend hundreds of dollars on their kratom needs. Our team is not biased in the kratom price range, but we prefer companies that offer good value and transparent pricing for their price range.
Transparency and Reputation
We gave ample consideration to some companies who have years of a good reputation of offering high-quality Kratom. Some pretty new companies have the motivation. Our team preferred companies who have a more well-known reputation for both service and quality. We would like to clarify that we are not against companies new in the industry, but we prefer those who showcase effective and proper quality control practices.
Health Benefits Being Advertised
We understand that Kratom is not a so-called miracle drug that can take away all illnesses or diseases. The FDA hasn’t approved kratom use for anything, and some studies even associate some risks with it. There are kratom companies that are honest about kratom benefits, while some present ridiculous claims that have not been proven. The best ones are still those who tell facts and do not hide anything from any potential consumer.
The factors mentioned above were the basis of our team to handpick the top kratom companies to buy from online.
What is Kratom?
Kratom is a tree that is common in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and South Asia. Parts of the tree, especially the leaves, have been utilized for centuries as components in traditional medicine. They use it to cure pain relief as well as other conditions.
Kratom has seen a surge in usage in the western world. A lot of people use Kratom for treating symptoms of anxiety or depression. Some use Kratom to energize both the mind and body.
Kratom is not FDA regulated because it’s a dietary supplement. The FDA has not given any official approval on using Kratom for anxiety, depression, or other types of needs to get a clearer picture.
How Does Kratom Work?
Kratom is not an opioid. However, many people have compared it to opioids due to its effects. Kratom seems to function similarly to codeine or morphine.
Kratom is rich in an ingredient called mitragynine. This ingredient binds to opioid brain receptors to relieve pain. Due to this reason, Kratom is to be believed to have anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects. According to some studies, Kratom is shown to have sedative effects.
What Does Kratom Do?
Kratom has not been approved by the FDA to be used for anything. Additional research is still required to verify whether kratom-advertised benefits are real. Nevertheless, people have been utilizing Kratom for different types of benefits, such as:
- Energy and fatigue
- Muscle aches and pain
- Opioid withdrawal and addiction
- High blood pressure
- Immunity and inflammation
- PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other similar conditions
There have been some studies that showcased Kratom to suppress appetite, which could be helpful for weight loss. Some people utilize Kratom for cognitive enhancements, overall wellness, and digestive issues.
Kratom – Traditional Uses
Kratom has been used for centuries in the regions where it is abundant. It has served an essential role in traditional medicine, especially in Southeast Asia and even Africa.
Traditionally, Kratom has also been known with ketum, kakum, Thom, thang, and biak. Doctors would use kratom leaves in alternative medicine as teas. Purportedly, these teas could help with opioid withdrawal, pain, energy and fatigue, and other effects.
In Southeast Asia, a traditional medicine practitioner usually recommends Kratom to help with opioid withdrawal and recovery.
Kratom is also used traditionally as a stimulant. Traditionally, Kratom is also smoked, chewed, or ingested as capsules. It can also be brewed as tea or be consumed orally.
How to Use Kratom
Traditionally, Kratom has been ingested as tea. Today, it is usually consumed via capsules.
Some of the most used ingesting methods of Kratom are the following:
There are even some people who consume kratom leaves that are still fresh or have been dried. Some add the dried leaves with boiling water to come up with tea.
When you purchase Kratom online, you will usually be acquiring dried kratom leaves that have been ground and inserted into a capsule. When you swallow that capsule, it helps carry the kratom ingredients through your stomach, and then the acids inside your body support the Kratom digested by the body.
Some people vaporize or smoke Kratom. These methods are the less popular ones, though.
The effect of Kratom may vary depending on the ingestion method. However, there are no proven studies that compare and contrast kratom effects based on the ingestion method.
Is Kratom Considered as Legal?
In many countries, Kratom is still considered illegal, even in Southeast Asian countries where Kratom is traditionally used and is widespread. In the U.S, Kratom is legal, but still, there are some states and cities that ban Kratom. Some Kratom websites will not even ship to specific Cities or States due to the implemented bans.
In Thailand, they passed a bill in 1943 that made the planting of kratom trees illegal. The government has issued legislative actions through the years, but the planting of Kratom is still illegal in Thailand to this day.
Another Southeast Asian country that has banned Kratom is Malaysia. In 2003, officials included Kratom as among the substances on the National Poison Act.
Kratom is also banned in the following countries: Finland, Australia, Denmark, Israel, Latvia, Japan, Myanmar, Lithuania, New Zealand, Romania, Poland, Singapore, Russia, Sweden, Vietnam, and South Korea.
States that declared Kratom illegal are the following: Arkansas, Alabama, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, Vermont, and Indiana. At the same time, Denver, San Diago, and Sarasota County have also passed laws to ban Kratom.
However, despite Kratom being declared illegal, you can still find illegal preparations of Kratom in bars and cafes in Malaysia and Thailand.
Kratom Strains and Types
Kratom has various strains, which can lead to different effects. Even if there is no significant research that compares different kratom strings from each other, you can find lots of online anecdotal evidence that compares various kratom strains.
As per anecdotal reports online, below are the most popular strains of Kratom along with their effects:
This Kratom is native to the country of Thailand. It comes in green, white, and red varieties. The effects of the Thai Kratom differ based on the color of the array. Some users take white and green kratom strains to simulate a high, while the red vein one is utilized for its pain relief effects.
This strain is known for longevity and strength. For those who aim to maximize Kratom’s effects for a long time, the Maeng Da strains might be the best option out there. It is available in green, red, or white colors. Some use Maeng Da due to its stimulant effects, while others utilize it for pain reduction. Thailand is where Maeng da originally came from, but it can also be seen in Malaysia and Indonesia today.
The Bali kratom comes from the famous island of its namesake. Bali, Indonesia, is one of the most popular cities in Southeast Asia. The Bali kratom is exclusive as a red vein kratom, usually chosen for pain relief effects. Many Bali kratom fans have claimed that this is the kratom strain with the most opioid-like qualities because of its impact on chronic pain and depression.
The Green Malay kratom is from Malaysia, and this strain has a distinct dark green color. In low doses, this Kratom can purportedly boost focus and energy while relieving pain as well. On its higher doses, some users claim to experience sedative effects. The Green Malay kratom is known for its impact on anxiety, pain relief, and energy.
Borneo kratom is native to the island of Borneo. It has green, white, and red vein options. Lots of people believe Borneo kratom has better sedative effects compared to other strains. The Borneo Kratom is usually used for effects on stress and anxiety.
Indo kratom comes from Indonesia. It is considered to be less potent compared to other strains. The majority of people who take Indo kratom strains feel a mild energy surge. Other people take Indo Kratom for pain relief, anxiety, relaxation, and overall well-being.
The Malaysian Kratom has red, white, and green varieties. Purportedly, it provides a balance between sedative and stimulating effects.
Other Kratom Strains
There are dozens of kratom strains found online in today’s market. The other notable strains are Elephant, Bentuangie, Bali Gold, Green Hulu Kapuas, Green Katapang, Red Ketapang, Red Horn, Red Dragon, Yellow Sumatra, and Red Sandai, among lots of other options.
Some suppliers of kratom rank strains based on their intended benefits. There are strains associated with mood and energy, while some are for sedation and relaxation.
Kratom Vein Colors
The veins of kratoms go through various colors in their cycle. New kratom plants showcase a red color, and as they reach the mid-portion of their growth, it changes into a whiter look. At the end of their growth cycle, kratom veins will have a green color.
Vein colors change the effects of Kratom. Here are the differences in vein colors and their effects, according to kratom users online:
Red (Early Growth Cycle)
Red kratom strains offer the best relaxation and pain-relieving effects. They’re typically the most popular strains for those seeking the most noticeable effects of Kratom. If you’re dealing with opiate withdrawal symptoms, for example, then you may want red kratom strains. The impact of red Kratom lasts about five hours.
White (Middle Growth Cycle)
White strains provide energy-boosting effects. They can also improve productivity. Some people use white strains to treat depression and insomnia. The impact of white strains lasts for three to five hours.
Green (Late Growth Cycle)
According to online reports, green strains are the most powerful for relieving pain. Green strains are also known for their mild stimulating effects. They’re ideal for lifting mood and providing other targeted benefits. The impact of green strains lasts for around eight hours.
Kratom Benefits: What Does Science Say?
Some studies have validated the use of Kratom, while other studies have shown it may not be effective – or even safe. More research is needed to verify the safety, efficacy, and benefits of Kratom. However, we’ll summarize some of Kratom’s best research below.
This 2017 review study published in Frontiers of Psychiatry shows that Kratom has stimulant and sedative dose-dependent effects. After reviewing dozens of studies on Kratom, researchers found evidence supporting the antinociceptive, antidepressant, anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), and anorectic effects.
However, researchers also identified safety concerns linked to Kratom. Researchers found a connection between kratom usage and hospital visits and deaths in several countries, for example. Overall, researchers found a lack of double-blind controlled trials on Kratom, making it difficult to accurately assess the effects – or safety – of Kratom in a professional setting.
Over the last few years, however, Kratom has surged in popularity. As more studies on Kratom get released, we’re learning more about what Kratom is and how it works.
How much Kratom should you take? What does science say about kratom dosages? In this 2018 study, researchers answered that question by surveying 8,049 kratom users. Users reported experiencing the benefits of Kratom at doses of around 5g, with people taking that dosage up to 3 times per day to experience the benefits of Kratom.
That study also found that most kratom users (56.91%) were males between 31 and 50 (55.09%).
Of the 8,049 kratom users surveyed, people reported using Kratom for the following benefits:
- Decreased pain (85.01% of surveyed kratom users)
- Increased energy (83.75%)
- Less depressive mood (80.00%)
A significant number of kratom users also reported using Kratom for less anxious mood, elevated mood, or reducing or stopping the use of opioid pain-relieving medication, among other effects.
Researchers have isolated 25 alkaloids from Kratom at a chemical level, with the primary psychoactive alkaloids being mitragynine and 7-hydroxy mitragynine. Studies show that these two compounds have mu-opioid receptor agonist activity.
Is Kratom a stimulant or a sedative? The answer to that question may depend on the dose. Kratom appears to have stimulant effects at lower levels, with users reporting increased alertness, physical energy, talkativeness, and overall social behavior. At higher doses, Kratom leads to more opioid-like effects along with sedative and euphoric effects.
Studies show it takes 5 to 10 minutes to feel the effects of Kratom, with effects lasting for 2 to 5 hours.
Kratom Side Effects
Of the 8,049 surveyed kratom users in a 2018 review, a significant number reported experiencing adverse side effects associated with Kratom.
20.93% of kratom users reported experiencing side effects from kratom usage, including nausea (12.75%), constipation (9.17%), and dizziness or drowsiness (4.81%).
Other common side effects include itching, sweating, dry mouth, tongue numbness, increased urination, and loss of appetite. These side effects appeared to be dose-dependent, with users consuming more than 8g of Kratom per dose experiencing more side effects.
More severe side effects of heavy, long-term kratom usage can include heart palpitations, high blood pressure, insomnia, loss of appetite, loss of libido, memory and cognition problems, kidney and liver problems, and psychosis. According to CDC data, in 2016, poison control centers received 660 calls about kratom exposure, with most reported side effects being minor or moderate.
The risk of side effects appears to increase when mixing Kratom with other substances, including alcohol.
Kratom can be deadly. Some studies show that kratom overdose can lead to coma and death. Other studies show that mixing Kratom with alcohol and other substances can lead to life-threatening complications.
If you stop using Kratom, you may experience withdrawal symptoms.
Withdrawal from Kratom can increase symptoms of anxiety and depression, for example.
Others experience insomnia, mood swings, decreased sexual drive, and nausea when going through kratom withdrawal.
Typically, you must use Kratom for an extended period to experience withdrawal symptoms. However, this period varies widely depending on your age, usage, and dosage.
According to this 2018 review, most users report taking an average kratom dose of around 5g to experience the effects. They take this dose up to three times per day.
According to kratom dosage charts, a 5g dose is considered strong. You can expect to experience sedative, euphoric, and analgesic (pain-relieving) effects at this dose.
According to anecdotal kratom dose guides online, these are the doses and effects associated with Kratom:
- 1g (Entry Level Dose): A 1g dose of Kratom may have stimulating and mood-boosting effects. These effects are subtle but noticeable. Experienced users may not feel this dose, but new users should feel them.
- 2g (Mild Dose): A 2g dose of Kratom is associated with mood-boosting and stimulating effects. If you did not experience the effects of Kratom at a smaller amount, then the mild dose may be an excellent second step.
- 3g to 4g (Moderate Dose): A 3g to 4g dose of Kratom is considered to be moderate, giving you a balance of stimulating, euphoric, sedation, and pain-killing effects.
- 4g to 5g (Strong Dose): Most people report using a 4g to 6g dose to feel the effects of Kratom, according to the 2018 survey. This is considered a potent dose for beginner users, and you should experience significant sedative, euphoric, and analgesic effects.
- 5g to 8g (Very Strong Dose): Most people cannot handle this dose. You can expect to experience significant sedative effects at this dose. Some people experience euphoria-induced hallucinations at this dose.
Overall, the dosage varies widely depending on age, weight, tolerance, physiology, and other factors.
It’s also important to note that dosage changes the types of effects you experience. For example, most people experience more opioid-like effects when taking higher doses of Kratom (5g and up). At lower doses, people feel more stimulating and energy-boosting effects. If you want to use Kratom as a stimulant, users recommend sticking to lower doses. If you’re going to enjoy sedative or pain relief effects, then users recommend higher doses.
