SLIDE SHOW: Corner of Love reaches another goal

Tanya Amador has reached another milestone with her Corner of Love missionary outreach program in Nicaragua.

Tanya Amador has reached another milestone with her Corner of Love missionary outreach program in Nicaragua.

Amador, a Maple Valley resident, said the nonprofit organization closed a deal for a piece of property in San Ramon, Nicaragua that will become both a leadership school and medical clinic.

The site is about 2 acres on the La Lima River. Amador said the site is on the border of town about six kilometers from the Corner of Love 18,000 square-foot dormitory in San Ramon.

The new building will be about 10,000 square feet and will be constructed from cinder block and cement.

Amador has been building the mission in San Ramon since 2000.

“What I am really excited about is this is what we have been getting to all this time,” Amador said. “This building means hope for the people down there.”

The cost of the site is $25,000. Amador said Corner of Love received a $5,000 grant from a Switzerland foundation and $1,200 from a Bermuda Church.

Corner of Love has scheduled a fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at The Spirit of Washington Event Center in Renton. The “Winter Dreams, Hope Abounds” auction and dinner will help in the purchase of the land and construction of the building. Amador estimates the building will cost more than $260,000 to build.

“I would be thrilled if it was built by the end of 2012,” Amador said.

Amador returned from her most recent trip to Nicaragua with a medical team.

She has her most ambitious missionary schedule set for 2010 with five trips planned, two in February then one each in June, October and November.

Some of the trips concentrate on medical and dental care, while others bring clothing, needed supplies and plant community gardens.

Amador, and her husband Nelson, began the mission through the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Maple Valley and it has now grown into a program serving thousands every year in the northern region of Nicaragua.

Amador said Robert J. Callahan, U.S. ambassador to Nicaragua, will join the mission in February for a “blessing of the land” ceremony at the site in San Ramon.
