One-day event puts 139 animals in new homes

Animal lovers opened opened their hearts, homes and wallets during the Suuper Pet Adoptathon last Saturday at King County’s animal control shelter in Kent.

Families and individuals adopted 139 homeless pets from the shelter, whose service area includes Covington, Maple Valley and Black Diamond. They also, in raffle drawings and a silent auction, donated $1,172 for medical care for abused, sick and injured animals at the shelter or in foster care.

The event was part of a national campaign to find homes for pets that are in shelters or foster homes. There are many more to go, local officials said.

“Although the event was a huge success, we still have cats, dogs and even rabbits“ for adoption, said Al Dams, acting manager of the county’s animal control program. “Summer is a tough season for most animal shelters and rescue organizations because animal populations increase dramatically. This event was a great start, but we need every responsible adult who may be thinking about getting a new pet to adopt from a shelter.”

Animals adopted last Saturday were living in the county shelter or were taken there for the day by animal welfare groups that take care of homeless animals.
